An image in the service of conservation

On the reverse of the photograph, Andrew P. Hill wrote the words “Uncut forest lands, Big Basin.” The text was not merely a description. Hill used his images of the redwood forests in the fight against logging and helped found the Sempervirens Club, the organization that championed the protection of the area. In 1902, Big Basin became California’s first state park. The photograph thus belongs to a period when the camera began to be used as an argument in nature conservation: an image could show what was at risk of disappearing and make a distant landscape politically present. Here, the forest is both subject and evidence in an early American conservation campaign.
